Dr. Nilanjana (Buju) Dasgupta

DR. NILANJANA (BUJU) DASGUPTA is a professor of Psychology and the Founding Director of the Institute of Diversity Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  Dr. Dasgupta’s work shines a light on how implicit biases influence people’s self-perceptions, performance, and academic and career choices. 

Dr. Dasgupta’s research is translational – moving between controlled lab experiments and naturalistic field studies with the goal of using research data to inform policy on social problems. Her most current research has focused on the types of academic and professional contexts that protect individuals’ sense of self and aspirations against negative stereotypes.

Dr. Dasgupta’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and American Psychological Foundation. She has receives the Application of Personality and Social Psychology Award from the Society for Personality & Social Psychology, the Hidden Bias Research Prize awarded by the Level Playing Field Institute, a private foundation in Silicon Valley, and the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Research and Creative Activity. Dr. Dasgupta has given the distinguished faculty lecture at the National Science Foundation and an invited presentation at a White House roundtable during the Obama administration convened by the White House Domestic Policy Council and Office of Science and Technology Policy. She has served on the National Science Foundation’s Advisory Committee for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences.
